Cedar Rapids, IA: Gary Lynn Schell passed peacefully away on March 8, 2024, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gary was born at home on March 12, 1948 in Washington Center, Missouri to Ben and Helen Schell. He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1966. He married Mary in 1984.
Gary will be dearly missed by his wife Mary, daughters Stephanie Schell, Tara (Chris) Murphy, Cherie (Phil) Thompson and Kristy (Michael) Morrow, grandchildren Corey (Taylor) Manders, Helaina Thompson, Anya Franzen, Sydney (Brandon) Lewis and Quentin Murphy, great grandchildren Everett and George Manders and Dillon Lewis, brother Donald (Judy) Schell and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father Ben, mother Helen, and brothers Carroll Dean, Gene and Norman Schell.
Gary dedicated his career to the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and running several small businesses. Outside of work, he found joy in spending time with his family, fishing, boating, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Woodworking and following NASCAR were also among his favorite pastimes.
At Gary’s request, his body will be donated to the University of Iowa for the advancement of science. A celebration will be held to honor Gary’s life and the impact he had on those around him at a later date. May he rest in peace.
