St. Joseph, MO: It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lou Alice Kalor, beloved wife and mother. Lou passed away peacefully at Mosaic Life Center in St. Joseph, Mo., on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Lou was born on July 30, 1937 in Wadena, Minn., to Orlando O. Henderson and Helen (Barker). She graduated from Henning High School in 1957. She married Leverne Lowell Kalor in October 1957. Lou lived in Minneapolis until she moved to Inver Grove Heights in 1964. She worked at Pearson Candy Company at this time. She moved to Ogilvie, Minn., in 1969. She worked as a CNA at the Elim Nursing Home in Milaca, Minn., until she retired.

Lou grew up on a farm near Henning, Minn., with her ten brothers and sisters. She spent a lot of time helping on the farm. One of her many tasks was to drive the work horses, Bess and Dan, with her sister Judy, while her father and brothers gathered the hay in the field. Occasionally she would ride the horses whose backs were so broad she couldn’t wrap her legs around them but had to sit with her legs sticking out. Lou liked to spend her hard-earned money on comic books and would happily lounge around the house on Saturday mornings reading instead of doing her chores. Much to the chagrin of her younger sister Judy.

When Lou was in High School she worked at Bundy’s, a former restaurant in Henning. She would go to the restaurant afterschool on Monday and stay in town, sleeping in a room above the restaurant, until Friday. Then riding the bus home from school on Friday.

Lou always had music playing in the house and loved to dance. She found much pleasure in tending her garden and sharing its bounty with friends and family. Lou also treasured creating personally crafted gifts for her loved ones. Her favorite crafts were crocheting, embroidery and cross-stitching. When she had a few moments of free time you could find her outside going for long walks, admiring the beauty of nature.

Lou was a sweet and caring soul who will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors: husband: Leverne of the home; son: Richard (Renee), White Bear Lake, Minn.; daughters: Carolee (Bill) McQuiston, Rolfe, Iowa, Janette Scott, Findlay, Ohio; sister: Judy (Richard) Tischler, Cambridge, Minn., Iris (James) Natoli, Cowpens, S.C.; seven grandchildren: James, Julie, Melissa, Ashley, Justin, Jonathan and Amanda. 18 great grandchildren, one great grandson: Miles.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Lou’s name to The Arbor Day Foundation.
