The Bethany Area Chamber of Commerce will join the Bethany Kiwanis Club in holding the Christmas in the Park celebration on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The Kiwanis Club will be serving pancakes, biscuits and gravy from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the South Harrison Elementary School. The pancake supper is part of the Kiwanians’ fundraising program to purchase warm caps, coats and gloves for children at all Harrison County school.

Santa will be making his first visit to Bethany at the Christmas program at the elementary school. Refreshments will be served.

Hayrides will leave the school for Memorial Park for a tour of the lighting displays. Carolers will be strolling through the park.

City Administrator Jan Hagler said local businesses and organizations are being asked to make donations for the Christmas celebration. Those contributing $50 will receive a 12×18 sign for display during the event.

Chamber President Rhonda Taylor also announced that the Chamber and city of Bethany will be sponsoring a Christmas lighting contest for residences and businesses. The top prize in both categories will be a $100 credit on their city utility bill, a $60 credit for second place and $40 for third place.

Lighting contest nominations must be submitted by Dec. 15 to the Chamber of Commerce office. Call 425-6358 and leave a message.

In other business at the Chamber meeting on Tuesday, Casey Campbell announced that the Toot-Toot Restaurant’s new buffet tables have been installed. The buffet allows for more efficient serving and a greater seating capacity.

Sarah Linthacum, education specialist for the Harrison County Health department, said some 446 responses has been received so far for the health agency’s survey on smoking attitudes in the county. The survey is being conducted in cooperation with the Smokebuster organizations of the South Harrison and Gilman City high schools. The results of the survey will be distributed to residents of the county through a health department newsletter to be published later in the fall.
