Mobile, AL: Charles Larry “Larry” Maloney, 83, passed away on July 30, 2026, at Springhill Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama, surrounded by his family and his best friend, Tom Willemsen.
Larry was born on December 6, 1942, in Moberly, Missouri, to Charles and Bernice Maloney where he attended early years of elementary school prior to his family relocating to Pattonsburg, Missouri where he graduated in 1960. Although Mobile became his home for the past 35 years, Larry never lost the strong Missouri roots that helped shape the person he became.
Larry leaves behind his wife, Barbara, of 62 years with whom he shared a lifetime of memories, adventures, hard work, and love. He is also survived by his children, David Maloney of Bethany, Missouri, and Lisa Yost (Stephen) of Pattonsburg, Missouri; his grandchildren, Hannah Yost, (Cody Freeman), Noah Bielby (Jacqueline), and Lilly Yost; and his great-granddaughter, Clara Jo Yost.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Berniece Maloney; his brothers-in-law, Cleo Plowman and Dave Dannar; his niece, Kelly Warner; and his great-niece, Josie Eulinger.
Larry is survived by sisters Patsy (Darrell) Teel of Pattonsburg, Missouri; Linda Maloney and Patty Dannar of Cameron, Missouri; and Kathy (Roger) Eulinger of Maysville, Missouri and brother, Wayne Maloney also of Cameron, Missouri.
Anyone who knew Larry knew the value he placed on hard work. His work ethic was something he carried with him throughout his entire life. He began his career as a carryout boy at the age of 12 years old at Merrigan’s Market in Pattonsburg, Missouri. From those humble beginnings, he worked his way up to becoming a butcher and eventually had the opportunity to purchase the business with his wife, Barbara. For 15 years, he proudly owned and operated Maloney’s Market. They also owned and operated the local Pizzeria and Corner Package Liquor. It was more than just a job or a business to Larry—it was a place where he served his community, worked alongside people he knew, and built friendships that lasted a lifetime after the businesses were sold.
After selling their businesses, Larry and Barbara began a new chapter together. They accepted positions as property managers, first working in Baton Rouge and later, Slidell, Louisiana, until being promoted to district supervisors overseeing properties throughout the southeastern United States. Their work eventually brought them to Mobile, Alabama, where they made their home for the past 35 years.
As proud as Larry was of the life he built through hard work, nothing made him prouder than his family. He took great pride in each of them and in their accomplishments, and they were always an important part of his life. His family knew how much they meant to him, not only through his words but through the pride he showed whenever he talked about them.
Larry also took great pride in his home and especially in having the one of prettiest yards in the neighborhood. He enjoyed keeping it looking just right and took satisfaction in seeing the results of his hard work. But one of the simplest and most familiar pictures of Larry was sitting on his front porch with a cold Diet Coke in hand. Neighbors passing by knew to honk their horns, and they could always count on getting a wave from Larry in return. It was a small tradition, but one that became part of the neighborhood and part of what made Larry, Larry. It may be impossible to pass that front porch without remembering Larry sitting there with his Diet Coke, ready with a wave for anyone who honked.
Larry was known for his loyalty to his family and his many friends. If Larry considered you a friend, you had a friend you could count on. He valued the relationships he built throughout his life and never forgot the people who were important to him.
Larry’s faith and service to others were also meaningful parts of his life. He was a member of First Baptist Church Dawes and previously served as a deacon at Sonrise Baptist Church in Mobile.
Larry proudly served his country as a member of the Missouri National Guard from 1963 to 1970. He was also a Freemason and was active in his community through his service with the Pattonsburg Lions Club and Volunteer Fire Department.
From a carryout boy in a small Missouri grocery store to a business owner and a career that took him across the country, Larry built his life through determination and hard work. But his greatest legacy cannot be measured by the businesses he owned, the jobs he held, or the miles he traveled. It can be found in the family he was so proud of, the friendships he kept, and the people who knew they could always count on him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Dawes Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. Family and friends are invited to come together to share memories, honor Larry, and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many.
