Robert Vincent Smith, 79, passed away with his loving wife by his side Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Services will be held December 8, 2018, at 10:30 am at Grandview Funeral Home.

Robert was born May 14, 1939, in Bethany, Mo., to Manly and Avis (Van Meter) Smith. He married Shirley Dotson Smith on July 20, 1957, in Bethany, Mo.

Bob retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 34 years of service, 25 of those years as manager, postal transportation. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He always spent time with his family and supported them in their sports and school activities. Bob was very proud of all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. Bob supported and encouraged them to pursue an advanced education. He also loved to whittle, research his family history, tell stories from his postal experience, and all his childhood adventures.

Robert is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Smith; daughters, Kristi A. Douglas, Sherri L. (Michael) Hummel of Bondurant, Iowa; grandchildren, Joscelind A. LaVine, Jennifer A. Slaugh, Ashcelyn G. Kline, Joshua D. (Alexa) Hummel, Jared R. (Jenna) Hummel, Jonathan R. Douglas, Katherine K. Douglas; great-grandchildren, Jaicee A. Magnani, Charles V. Slaugh, Lilly A. Hummel, Dillon M. Slaugh, Lucianna L. Magnani, Domanic K. Douglas, Gracelynn M. Hummel, Gianni J. Patton, Bash B. Patton, Lincoln R. Hummel; sisters, Reva J. (Cletus) Herold of Johnston, Iowa, Jerry J. (Bob) Herold of Des Moines, Iowa; brother, Garry D. (Lila) Smith of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Deanna K. (Jack) Bivins, Linda L. (Randy) Watson; nieces, Patricia Graham, Deb Clemens, Lori K. Rhodes, Pamela Aagaard, Michele Herold, Diane Moreno, Alyssa (Zack) Ward; nephews, Doug Herold, John Herold, Michael Herold, Garry David Smith, Tim Smith and Adam Watson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patsy A. Rhodes; brother-in-law, Lewis Rhodes, and nephew, Paul D. Herold.

Contributions may be made to the family for a future memorial.
